With a feather-weight of only 1 kg, the attractive, sleek Acer Aspire One 531 netbook was made to be mobile.ĭesigned for life on the move, the Acer Aspire One 531 is equipped with WiFi for wireless internet access at numerous hotspots around the world. A 160GB Hard Drive and 1GB of Memory help complete its core specifications, providing you with all the processing power and storage space you need for your every-day computing activities.īeneath its refined, black chassis lies a stunning 10.1-inch widescreen LCD, which renders picture in crisp, rich detail, owing to a generous 1024 x 600 pixel resolution, whilst the use of LED backlighting ensures a longer battery life and instant brightness. The Acer Aspire One 531 lets you take your computing wherever you want it to go and is driven by the energy-efficient Intel® Atom™ Processor N270, and runs Microsoft's Genuine Windows® 7 Starter operating system. Though smaller, data access time approaches zero for all practical purposes. They’re available in 128GB and 256GB sizes. For the fastest data access speeds, solid state drives can be substituted. The standard storage device for this computer is a 320GB, 7,200RPM hard drive. For even more power, the unit can be equipped with 8GB of RAM which otherwise shares the same specifications. That is currently billed as a limited time feature and it could be reverted to the more standard 4GB. The speed of this computer is enhanced by the more generous than normal inclusion of 6GB of dual channel DDR3 RAM running at 1333MHz. The video processor is integrated into the motherboard which is likely the single feature that limits this machine in terms of extreme gaming. While that’s likely to be more than adequate for most users, there is an option to replace the processor with an even faster Intel Core i7 820QM Quad Core with a 1.73GHz clock speed that can be pushed to 3.06GHz in turbo mode. In turbo mode, that speed can be pushed up to 2.8GHz. It comes equipped with one of Intel’s leading edge chips, the Intel Core i7 720QM Quad Core processor with each core running at a snappy 1.6GHz and 6MB Cache.

We found that this unit offers a terrific selection of options at a reasonable cost and is a good choice for many users. As with any computer, the processor is the heart of the XPS 16. Its heavy frame places it in the desktop replacement category, alongside the Asus K53E-B1 (5.8 lbs) and Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt) ($2,199 direct, 4.5 stars) (5.5 lbs). A second screen adds a lot of weight and is the reason why the Iconia weighs 5.8 pounds-at least a pound heavier than other 14-inch laptops like the Asus U41JF-A1 ($857 street, 4.5 stars) (4.7 lbs) and Samsung QX410-J01 ($829.99 street, 4 stars) (5 lbs).

The Iconia is covered in aluminum, which would have been a classier touch had its murky, brownish tint not been so dull. For the same reason, inverting the laptop and using the upper screen with the virtual keyboard isn't an option either. In other words, it's not meant to be held like a book, since weight isn't distributed equally between both sides (the bottom half, where all the ports and components reside, is much heavier) and the lack of an accelerometer (to change the screen orientation) seems to point to that. Even though there are two screens, there's a predefined top and bottom half. The Iconia is a 14-inch laptop and designed to be treated as such.
